Jammu and Kashmir: A Living Tapestry of Culture and Spirituality: Rajni sethi

Jammu, 25 July 2025: Jammu and Kashmir, often called the Crown of India, is a land of immense cultural, religious, and geographical diversity. This region is known not just for its breathtaking landscapes and snow-clad mountains, but also for its vibrant traditions, rich heritage, and deeply spiritual roots. People from various castes, communities, and religions coexist peacefully here, contributing to a beautiful mosaic of unity in diversity.

Both Jammu and Kashmir divisions are dotted with tourist destinations that attract millions of visitors from across India and abroad. While Kashmir is known for its valleys, gardens, and lakes, Jammu holds an equally significant place in spiritual tourism, being revered as the City of Temples. Temples like Raghunath Mandir, Ranbireshwar Mandir, and Mata Vaishno Devi shrine are central to the spiritual identity of the region.

Currently, the sacred Amarnath Yatra is underway, bringing a spiritual wave across Jammu and Kashmir. This annual pilgrimage sees lakhs of devotees making their way to the holy Amarnath cave in the Himalayas, reinforcing the spiritual character and religious harmony of the Union Territory.

In this spiritually vibrant environment, a new initiative has taken shape in Jammu—the Tawi Aarti, held every evening on the banks of the revered Tawi River. Recently inaugurated, the Tawi Aarti has quickly become a powerful spiritual and cultural symbol. It is held daily at 7 PM near the fourth Tawi bridge and has already started attracting thousands of devotees, pilgrims, and tourists.

The river Tawi is not just a geographical entity; it holds deep mythological and spiritual significance. Often referred to as Suryaputri, or the Daughter of the Sun, Tawi is sacred to the people of the region. Performing Aarti on its banks is both a mark of devotion and a celebration of Jammu’s spiritual essence.

The decision to hold the Tawi Aarti regularly is a historic and commendable step. It symbolizes the revival of traditional values and the promotion of Jammu’s cultural and religious identity. It has added a new spiritual dimension to the city, making it a must-visit location for devotees and tourists alike. Especially during the Amarnath Yatra season, the Tawi Aarti is seen as a spiritual extension of the pilgrimage, allowing pilgrims to experience divine vibes even before reaching the cave shrine.

More than just a religious ritual, the Tawi Aarti is a cultural movement. It connects the younger generation with the age-old traditions of the Dogra community and promotes pride in our rich heritage. In a fast-changing world, such initiatives serve as reminders of our glorious past and encourage the youth to stay rooted in their culture and values.

The participation of local people, administration, and religious leaders in organizing and promoting the Tawi Aarti reflects a collective effort to elevate Jammu’s profile as a spiritual and cultural destination. This initiative has not only enhanced the religious tourism potential of the region but has also strengthened the spiritual atmosphere during the Amarnath Yatra.

I request all the people of Jammu to wholeheartedly join the Tawi Aarti and become part of this divine initiative. Let us come together to reconnect with our cultural and spiritual roots, celebrate our sacred river, and promote unity, faith, and tradition. Your presence will make it more meaningful.

In conclusion, the Tawi Aarti is more than a daily ritual—it is a proud expression of Dogra identity, a beacon of spiritual revival, and a step toward preserving and promoting Jammu’s rich traditions for generations to come.
