Jammu and Kashmir Mahila Congress Holds Protest Over Manipur Issue; Seeks Accountability from Authorities

Srinagar, Jul 24: The Jammu and Kashmir Mahila Congress staged a protest at the party headquarters, voicing their concerns over the handling of the Manipur situation by the Centre. Shameem Raina, addressing reporters, expressed disappointment in the recent incidents of violence against women in Manipur, despite the promises of a “new India” by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The ethnic violence in Manipur, which began on May 3 during a “Tribal Solidarity March,” has resulted in over 160 fatalities and left thousands homeless. Last week, a distressing video emerged showing two women from opposing communities being paraded naked by a group of men. The delayed response and registration of an FIR have fueled public outrage.

Shameem Raina questioned the silence of Union Women and Child Welfare Minister, Smriti Irani, in the face of such heinous crimes. She emphasized that the government should prioritize the safety and justice for women and take decisive actions against the perpetrators.

The Mahila Congress had planned a march from Lal Chowk office to Raj Bhawan to highlight their concerns and demand accountability from the authorities. However, the police halted their movement, leading to a peaceful protest within the premises.

Raina further called for the resignation of the Chief Minister of Manipur and the imposition of President’s rule in the state. The protesters sought to draw attention to the urgent need for a secure and just environment for women, urging the highest levels of governance to take proactive measures to protect women’s rights and safety.
