Japan Initiates Diplomatic Outreach, Plans Call with Iranian President

Tokyo steps up diplomacy amid escalating Middle East tensions

Japan, Apr 07 : Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Tuesday confirmed that arrangements are underway for a telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, as hostilities continue to intensify across the Middle East.

Speaking in parliament, Takaichi said Japan is working to maintain active communication channels with both United States and Iran, highlighting the importance of diplomatic engagement during the ongoing crisis. She noted that outreach efforts include planned calls with leaders from both nations to help ease tensions.

In a related development, Japan confirmed that an Iranian held Japanese national, detained since January, has been released. According to Kyodo News, the individual is believed to be a senior journalist associated with NHK.

Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi also held discussions with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi. During the call, Motegi expressed deep concern over the continuing cycle of retaliatory attacks involving Iran and regional players, stressing the urgent need for de-escalation.

The foreign ministry reiterated Japan’s consistent stance advocating for dialogue and urged Tehran to actively participate in ongoing diplomatic efforts led by the international community.

The situation carries significant economic implications for Japan, which depends heavily on the Middle East for energy imports, including oil and liquefied natural gas.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump renewed criticism of allied nations, including Japan, for not taking a more active role in addressing the conflict, adding further pressure on Tokyo’s diplomatic balancing act.
