J&K Administration Launches Massive Plantation Drive to Boost Green Cover
Schools, local communities and government departments join hands to promote environmental conservation across the Union Territory.
Jammu, June 29: The Jammu and Kashmir administration has launched a large-scale plantation campaign across multiple districts to enhance green cover, strengthen environmental conservation and promote public participation in ecological restoration initiatives.
The drive involves the Forest Department, educational institutions, municipal bodies, panchayats and several voluntary organisations. Thousands of saplings, including native and fruit bearing species, are being planted along roadsides, school campuses, parks, riverbanks and degraded forest areas.
Officials said the campaign aims to improve biodiversity, reduce soil erosion and contribute to climate resilience by increasing tree cover across both urban and rural regions. The initiative also focuses on restoring degraded landscapes and encouraging community stewardship of natural resources.
Special awareness programmes are being organised in schools and colleges to educate students about environmental protection, sustainable development and the importance of preserving forests. Volunteers and local residents have actively participated in plantation activities across several districts.
The Forest Department has urged citizens to adopt planted saplings and ensure their maintenance during the critical growth period. Officials emphasised that long-term survival of trees depends not only on planting but also on regular watering, protection and community involvement.
Environmental experts welcomed the initiative, stating that increased green cover can improve air quality, support wildlife habitats and help mitigate the effects of climate change. They also highlighted the importance of expanding urban forests to reduce rising temperatures in cities.
The administration plans to continue plantation activities throughout the monsoon season while monitoring the survival rate of newly planted saplings. Authorities hope the campaign will contribute to a cleaner environment and encourage greater public responsibility toward protecting Jammu and Kashmir’s natural heritage.
