J&K Govt Sanctions Big-Ticket Power Infrastructure Expansion in Srinagar

Grid station expansion and transmission line upgrades aimed at improving electricity reliability and reducing outages across Srinagar and nearby areas.

JAMMU, May 15: In a significant move to strengthen the electricity network in Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir Government has approved a series of major power transmission projects for Srinagar and its surrounding regions.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the Council of Ministers chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The approved initiatives are designed to improve transmission efficiency, enhance load capacity, and provide uninterrupted power supply to consumers.

Among the key projects cleared by the government is the expansion of the Grid Sub Station at Zainakote. The capacity of the station will be increased from 450 MVA to 780 MVA at an estimated cost of ₹67.66 crore. Officials said the enhancement will help meet the growing electricity demand in Srinagar and adjoining areas.

The government has also sanctioned the upgradation of the 132 KV Pampore–Rawalpora and Rawalpora–Bemina transmission lines. The project, estimated to cost ₹25.47 crore, is expected to improve the stability of the transmission network and strengthen power distribution infrastructure in the Valley.

Officials stated that the approved works will play a crucial role in reducing unscheduled power cuts, easing load pressure on existing infrastructure, and ensuring a more dependable electricity supply for households, businesses, and public institutions.

The projects are part of the administration’s broader efforts to modernize the power sector and improve energy infrastructure across Jammu and Kashmir.
