John Alford, Ex-‘London’s Burning’ Star, Sentenced for Sexual Assault of Two Teenage Girls
Ex-‘London’s Burning’ Actor John Alford Sentenced to 8½ Years for Sexual Assault of Teen Girls
London, Jan 15 : Former TV Star Convicted of Grooming and Assault
Once a familiar face on British television, John Alford, known for London’s Burning and Grange Hill, has been sentenced to eight and a half years in prison for sexually assaulting two teenage girls, aged 14 and 15. The case has shocked fans and sparked discussions about abuse of power and trust.
The Night of the Offences
The assaults occurred on 9 April 2022 at a house in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, where the girls were spending the night at a friend’s home. Alford, 54 at the time, arrived after drinking at a nearby pub. Court evidence revealed he supplied alcohol to the underage girls and spent around £250 on food, alcohol, and cigarettes. Prosecutors described this as deliberate grooming rather than generosity.
Charges and Conviction
Alford, whose real name is John Shannon, faced trial at St Albans Crown Court. He was found guilty of four counts of sexual activity with the younger girl and sexual assault and assault by penetration involving the older girl. Recorder Caroline Overton noted the offences had a “significant and ongoing impact” on the victims.
Courtroom Denial and Reaction
Alford denied all charges, claiming no DNA evidence linked him to the crimes and alleging the girls attempted to extort him. The jury rejected his defence, delivering a guilty verdict that left him visibly distraught in court.
Impact on Victims
Both girls gave victim impact statements. The younger girl said the assault affected her and her family “in every way,” while the older girl stated, “This man destroyed my mental wellbeing.”
Past Convictions and Court Statement
Alford’s criminal history includes a 1999 conviction for supplying drugs. The judge emphasised that celebrity status offers no protection from serious crimes and that the focus must remain on the victims rather than the fall of a public figure.
