NEW DELHI, Aug 28: Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal strongly criticized Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday for his controversial statement regarding ‘Miya’ Muslims. Sarma’s remark, “I will not let ‘Miya’ Muslims take over the State,” was denounced by Sibal as “pure communal venom,” emphasizing that such comments demand action rather than silence.
Sarma’s statement came during a discussion in the Assam Assembly about the admissibility of adjournment motions from opposition parties. The debate centered on the law and order situation in the state following a disturbing incident involving the gang rape of a 14-year-old girl in Nagaon.
Reacting to Sarma’s remarks, Sibal took to social media platform X to express his condemnation: “Himanta (Assam CM): ‘Will take sides. Will not let Miya Muslims take over all of Assam’. My take: Pure communal venom. Actionable. Silence is not an answer.”
