Karra Calls for Coordination Committee, Asserts Congress-NC Alliance is ‘Workable’

Srinagar, Feb 26: Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) President, Tariq Hameed Karra, has reiterated the demand for a coordination committee between the Congress and the National Conference (NC) to ensure streamlined governance and effective policy implementation. Describing the current alliance between the two parties as “workable and functional,” Karra emphasized the need for greater clarity on governance mechanisms while reaffirming Congress’s primary demand—the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.

Speaking to KNO, Karra stated that while the Congress-NC coalition remains operational, there is an urgent requirement for a structured coordination mechanism. “Currently, the relationship is workable and okay. The partnership is functional, but we continue to push for clarity on business rules and a formal coordination framework to address key policy matters,” he said.

Karra underscored the Congress party’s commitment to alleviating public hardships, as outlined in its manifesto. He highlighted the concerns raised by people during district-wise meetings, stating that while voters participated in the elections with enthusiasm, their expectations from the government remain unfulfilled. Expressing optimism about post-budget allocations, he said, “We hope that after the budget session, with the flow of funds and targeted allocations, people’s issues will be effectively addressed.”

The JKPCC chief also reiterated that the restoration of statehood remains the foremost concern of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. “Public sentiment overwhelmingly favors the restoration of statehood. People recognize it as the most pressing issue and are even willing to take this movement forward,” Karra asserted. He added that he has been actively engaging with the public to mobilize support for the cause, aiming to transform it into a broader people’s movement.

As the assembly session approaches, Karra assured that the Congress will continue to push for greater transparency in governance and demand that the statehood issue be taken up with the Centre. “We are committed to ensuring that statehood is restored, and we will persist in raising this demand at all levels,” he said.

The demand for a coordination committee has been a longstanding call from Congress leaders, who believe it is essential for ensuring smooth decision-making within the coalition government. However, the National Conference has yet to formally respond to this demand. With the budget session expected to set the tone for the government’s policy direction, political observers will be keenly watching whether the Congress’s push for a structured mechanism within the alliance gains traction.
