Congress leaders praised the Indian women’s cricket team for their spirited performance and landmark victory over South Africa, calling it a proud and inspiring moment for the nation.
New Delhi, November 3: Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, congratulated Team India for winning their first ever ICC Women’s World Cup title, lauding the players’ determination, teamwork, and historic achievement that has brought immense pride to the nation.
India’s long wait for the coveted title finally ended after two heartbreaks in the 2005 and 2017 finals, as the team delivered a clinical 52-run victory over South Africa in the 2025 final. The match witnessed standout all round performances from Shafali Verma (87 runs and 2/36) and Deepti Sharma (58 runs and 5/39), sealing India’s place in cricketing history.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Kharge said,
“Heartiest congratulations to the Indian Women’s Cricket Team for their outstanding victory in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025. Your remarkable performance, determination, and teamwork have brought immense pride to the nation. This triumph is not just a sporting milestone; it’s a celebration of women’s power, resilience, and leadership.”
He added that the entire nation stood united in celebrating the team’s glorious moment, saying,
“You have not only won the World Cup but also every Indian heart.”
Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, also lauded the Women in Blue for their inspiring win.
“What a moment of pride! Our Women in Blue have made history and touched a billion hearts. Your courage, grit, and grace have brought glory to India and inspired countless young girls to dream fearlessly. You didn’t just lift a trophy, you lifted a nation’s spirit. Jai Hind!” he posted.
Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor joined in the celebrations, describing it as a “wonderful day for Indian cricket.”
“Amazing scenes on TV tonight as India win the Women’s World Cup for the first time in our cricket history! What a wonderful day for Indian cricket and so much for the #WomenInBlue to be proud of,” he wrote on X.
Earlier in the match, South Africa won the toss and opted to bowl first. India’s innings were anchored by a century stand between Smriti Mandhana (45 off 58) and Shafali Verma, followed by another 62-run partnership between Shafali and Jemimah Rodrigues (24 off 37), setting up a strong total of 166/2.
India’s bowlers then capitalized on the momentum, bundling out South Africa efficiently to secure the nation’s maiden Women’s World Cup crown a moment now etched in Indian sporting history.
