KPDCL Implements Prepaid Mode for Smart Meters: 10,000 Consumers Make the Switch

04-07-2023 : The Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) made an important announcement on Monday regarding the successful transition of approximately 10,000 consumers to prepaid mode for their smart meters in phase-I. This decision came as a directive from the Union Power Ministry, mandating all consumers with smart meters from phase-I to switch to prepaid mode. The primary goal behind this move is to address the issue of unpaid electricity bills, which has become a concern since the installation of smart meters.

The Chief Engineer of KPDCL emphasized that the shift to prepaid mode was a necessary step to ensure that consumers use electricity responsibly based on their actual consumption. Non-payment of electricity bills has prompted this measure, aiming to encourage timely payments and promote responsible energy usage. Out of the 57,000 individuals covered in phase-I, around 10,000 consumers have already completed the transition to prepaid mode.

It is essential to understand that the installation of smart meters in Srinagar city is part of a larger project. The ultimate objective is to install smart meters for the entire consumer base, which totals around 2.3 lakhs, by the end of October this year. The project is being implemented by the project implementation agency (PIA) RECPDCL. During phase-I, 59,000 meters were installed, and during phase-II, 11,000 meters were installed (with a target of 1.5 lakhs for lot A and 1.5 lakhs for lot B). The contracts for phase-I and phase-II (Lot A) were awarded to M/S Techno Electric, while M/S Anvil Cables secured the contract for phase-II (Lot B).

The transition to prepaid mode for smart meters not only promotes efficient and responsible electricity usage but also aims to streamline the payment process. By requiring consumers to pay for electricity in advance, the system ensures a fair and accurate representation of energy consumption. This initiative aligns with the broader goal of achieving a more efficient and sustainable power distribution system in Srinagar city.

As the implementation of smart meters continues, it is crucial for consumers to adhere to the instructions provided by KPDCL and complete the conversion to prepaid mode within the designated time frame. Complying with payment obligations and adopting responsible energy practices will contribute to the success of this initiative and improve the overall efficiency of the electricity distribution system in Srinagar city.
