Landslide in remote village of Jammu and Kashmir leaves over a dozen homes uninhabitable

19-02-2023 : A massive landslide in the remote village of Duksar Dal in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district has caused damage to over a dozen residential houses, leaving 13 families homeless, according to officials. The affected families were relocated to safer areas and given immediate relief, while the main road close to the village was closed to vehicles after developing cracks. The incident occurred in the Gool sub-division, 45 km from the Ramban district headquarters, and comes two weeks after 19 residential houses, a mosque, and a religious school for girls developed cracks due to  land sinking at Nai Basti village of Doda district.

The Sub-Divisional Magistrate Gool Tanveer-ul-Majeed Wani said that 13 houses were damaged and rendered uninhabitable due to the landslide over the past three days. The affected families were provided with tents, ration, utensils, and blankets as immediate relief. The land started sliding on Friday, also affecting a local graveyard. The experts from the Geological Survey of India (GSI) will be visiting the site within the next couple of days to investigate the sudden landslide.

The SDM said that the affected families would be compensated from the State Disaster Management Fund as per laid down norms. The main road connecting Gool and Sangaldan was closed after it also developed cracks. The local sarpanch, Raqeeb Wani, said that agricultural and horticulture land was also hit by the landslide, and farmers needed to be provided adequate compensation for the loss of fruit-bearing trees.

Meanwhile, a team from the National Institute of Disaster Management surveyed Nai Basti village of Tharthri for a survey on Sunday, officials said. Several other teams, including experts from the GSI, have inspected the affected village to determine the underlying factors for the development of cracks in the concrete structures.
