Mandatory 2-Year Central Deputation Introduced for IPS Officers (2011 Batch Onwards) to Qualify for IG Empanelment: Govt
Central Deputation Requirement for IG Empanelment Aims to Strengthen Field Experience Among Senior IPS Officers
New Delhi, Jan 31: The government has mandated that Indian Police Service (IPS) officers of the 2011 batch and later must complete at least two years of central deputation at the SP or DIG level to qualify for empanelment as Inspector General (IG) at the Centre.
An official order stated that this measure ensures senior IPS officers possess adequate experience working at the central level before taking up IG responsibilities. “A minimum of two years of central experience at SP/DIG or equivalent level shall be mandatory for empanelment of IPS officers at IG/eqvt. level at the Centre from the 2011 batch onwards,” the ministry said.
Previously, Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers were required to have central deputation experience for similar empanelment, but no such condition existed for IPS officers in Central Armed Police Forces or other central IG-level postings.
Officials noted that the new requirement is aimed at enhancing the preparedness and efficiency of senior police officers in central assignments, ensuring they are equipped with both field and policy-level exposure before assuming critical leadership roles.
