Manoj Bajpayee’s ‘Gajab Raat’ Premieres on Netflix, Explores Crime and Moral Dilemmas
Directed by Ritesh Shah and backed by Neeraj Pandey, the Hindi thriller follows a police officer whose encounter with an injured girl sets off a dangerous chain of events.
New Delhi, Oct 23: Actor Manoj Bajpayee’s latest thriller, Gajab Raat, began streaming on Netflix on Friday, bringing a crime story centred on corruption, difficult choices and accountability to audiences. Directed by Ritesh Shah and produced by Neeraj Pandey’s Friday Film Works, the Hindi film unfolds over a single night in which an unexpected encounter pushes its central character into an increasingly complicated situation.
The film follows a corrupt Delhi police officer whose encounter with a severely injured girl, allegedly abandoned from a moving car, disrupts his plans and draws him into a wider conspiracy. What begins as an unexpected incident develops into a situation involving competing interests, questionable decisions and people whose motives are not immediately clear.
Bajpayee plays the central character, Ajay Dikshit, a police officer whose choices form the foundation of the narrative. Rather than presenting a straightforward conflict between right and wrong, the film examines how personal interests and professional responsibilities can collide when an individual is confronted with a situation that cannot easily be controlled.
The single-night setting is central to the film’s storytelling approach. As events unfold within a limited period, the characters are forced to respond quickly, leaving little opportunity to reconsider their actions. The resulting pressure creates the backdrop for a story in which every decision can carry consequences beyond what the characters initially anticipate.
Neeraj Pandey, who has previously collaborated with Bajpayee, said the project was designed to combine suspense with questions that remain relevant beyond the events of the story. According to the filmmaker, the film’s tension comes not only from the unfolding mystery but also from the moral dilemmas faced by its characters.
The project marks a reunion between Pandey and Bajpayee after nearly a decade. Their collaboration brings together two names associated with crime-oriented storytelling in Hindi entertainment. Pandey has worked on projects including the Khakee series, Sikandar Ka Muqaddar and Taskaree, continuing his association with Netflix through stories involving investigations, crime and complicated human motivations.
Bajpayee said he was drawn to the uncertainty surrounding his character and the opportunity to portray someone whose motivations cannot be understood immediately. The actor has frequently taken on roles involving flawed individuals and morally complicated situations, and this film again places him in a narrative where the distinction between personal benefit and responsibility becomes important.
The supporting cast includes Saqib Saleem, Akshay Oberoi, Divya Dutta, Kiku Sharda and Nushrratt Bharuccha. Their characters contribute to the developing investigation, with different interests and relationships adding further complications to the central conflict. The ensemble allows the film to move beyond the police officer’s individual predicament and examine how several people become connected through a single chain of events.
Ritesh Shah, who has worked as a screenwriter, makes his directorial debut with the film. Shah said his interest in suspense stories shaped the approach to the project, particularly the challenge of maintaining urgency while allowing the audience to gradually understand the characters and their motivations.
The restricted timeline gives the director an opportunity to build tension without relying exclusively on action. The narrative instead centres on the consequences of decisions, the pressure of an unfolding situation and the uncertainty surrounding what each character knows.
The film also underwent a title change before its release. It was initially announced as Ghooskhor Pandat but was renamed Gajab Raat following objections that the original title could hurt the sentiments of members of the Brahmin community. Netflix informed the Delhi High Court that the producers had agreed to change the title, after which a petition seeking a stay on the release was disposed of.
The controversy placed attention on the relationship between creative choices and the sensitivities of communities represented or referenced in film titles. The revised name was adopted ahead of the October 23 streaming premiere.
With its release, Gajab Raat adds another crime thriller to Netflix’s Hindi-language catalogue. Its premise combines a police investigation with a character study of an officer confronted by the consequences of his own decisions. The story’s emphasis on accountability also gives the central mystery a broader dimension than simply identifying those responsible for a crime.
The film brings together an established lead actor, a producer with experience in suspense-driven stories and a screenwriter moving into direction. Whether audiences respond most strongly to the mystery, the performances or the ethical questions at its centre will become clearer as viewers discover the film.
For Bajpayee, the release provides another opportunity to explore a character whose choices are central to the plot rather than presenting an uncomplicated hero. For Shah, it represents a new phase in his career, moving from writing stories for the screen to directing one himself.
Gajab Raat is available on Netflix from October 23, 2026. The film’s single night structure, ensemble cast and focus on moral uncertainty place it within the crime thriller genre while making the consequences of personal decisions a key part of its narrative.
