Massachusetts Proclaims August 15 as ‘India Day’ to Honor Indian Heritage

India, Aug 06 : Massachusetts has officially proclaimed August 15 as India Day, recognising the invaluable contributions of the Indian-American community to the state’s cultural, economic and civic life. Governor Maura Healey issued the proclamation ahead of India’s Independence Day celebrations, highlighting the enduring relationship between India and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

The proclamation, dated August 1, calls upon residents across the state to observe the occasion with appropriate ceremonies and community participation. It acknowledges the efforts of Indian community organisations and advocates that have strengthened cultural exchange, promoted civic engagement and fostered greater understanding through annual Independence Day celebrations and public service initiatives.

Adding to the recognition, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu also proclaimed August 15 as India Day in the city. Her declaration welcomed the opening of the new Indian Consulate in Boston and praised the visit of the Indian naval sailing vessel INS Sudarshini during the SAILBOSTON-250 celebrations, describing both events as milestones in strengthening India-US ties.

The governor’s proclamation notes that August 15, 2026, marks the 79th anniversary of India’s independence from British rule, describing the event as a defining moment that paved the way for the world’s largest democracy. It highlights India’s democratic values and its long-standing commitment to peace, progress and inclusive development.

Recognising the global presence of people of Indian origin, the document states that India has the world’s largest diaspora, with more than 36 million individuals living abroad. Of these, over five million reside in the United States, making significant contributions across diverse sectors while enriching American society through entrepreneurship, innovation and public service.

The proclamation also celebrates India’s rich civilisational heritage, describing the country as a unique blend of cultures, languages, religions, traditions and customs united by a shared national identity. This diversity, it says, continues to inspire communities around the world.

Special recognition was given to the Indian-American population in Massachusetts for its achievements in healthcare, science, technology, education, business and public administration. According to the proclamation, these contributions have played a key role in strengthening the state’s economy while enhancing its multicultural character.

Governor Healey further acknowledged that Independence Day celebrations organised by the Indian-American community have become an important platform for promoting cultural understanding and reinforcing democratic ideals. These events, the proclamation noted, reflect the community’s commitment to preserving its heritage while actively contributing to the growth and prosperity of Massachusetts.

With the dual proclamations from the state government and the City of Boston, this year’s observance is expected to further strengthen cultural ties between India and the United States, while recognising the achievements and enduring impact of the Indian diaspora across Massachusetts.
