Media’s Role in Conflict Resolution Highlighted in National Press Day Webinar by HWPL and University of Jammu
Jammu University, HWPL Join Hands to Inspire Young Journalists on National Press Day
Jammu,16-11-2024: To commemorate National Press Day, the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, University of Jammu, in collaboration with HWPL (Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light), an international non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Seoul, South Korea today organized an International webinar on “Global Journalists Promoting Peace
The webinar was hosted by HWPL organization members Rene Kim, Alex, and Kevin, wherein the Head of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, Prof. Garima Gupta, and other faculty members including Prof. Dushant Rai, Dr. Pardeep Singh Bali, Ms. Kumerjit Chajgotra, and Ms.Ramiyan Bhardwaj were present.
The webinar begins with an introductory session by Kevin, who introduced the topic of the Webinar, “Global Journalists Promoting Peace.”
Talking about peace journalism, Rene Kim said that peace is the only path and value that all humanity can advance together.
She stated that the perspective that a global journalist should have a role to play in bringing Peace.
She discussed the impact of the media on conflicts and disputes and how journalists sacrifice a lot without expecting anything in return to achieve such goals.
“The importance of promoting harmony and resolving conflicts, as invoked by Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, should be the responsibility of the journalists,” she said and added that it is the responsibility of a journalist to highlight the stories promoting harmony and peace.
She further asserted how peace reporting can lead to inclusion in society.
” If a group of people is shown as a liability, then they begin to be excluded. If people are shown as victims, then people restart including them and work towards human rights,” she maintained.
Speaking on the occasion, HoD, Prof. Garima Gupta, said that this webinar is just the beginning of the collaboration between the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, University of Jammu, and Korean organizations.
She said that such events provide insight to the students about the important role of media in society.
“I am hopeful that this event, coinciding with the National Press Day, will help the budding journalists to understand the intricacies of the profession,” she said and added that it will help the students to imbibe peaceful narratives for the Global peace throughout their career.
Ms. Kumerjit Chajgotra presented a vote of thanks to the members of HWPL, faculty members, and all the students of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies for active participation in the webinar.
