Medvedev Disqualified Against Djokovic After Ball Hits Spectator at China Open

The Russian was removed from his semifinal after striking a ball into the stands, ending his China Open campaign in unusual circumstances.

Beijing, Oct 6: Daniil Medvedev was disqualified from his China Open semifinal against Novak Djokovic on Monday after hitting a ball into the spectator area and striking a person in the front row, bringing an extraordinary end to his campaign in Beijing.

The incident occurred during a tense semifinal when Medvedev was trailing Djokovic 5-7, 3-5. After losing a point, the Russian struck a rebounding ball towards the stands behind him. The ball hit a spectator in the eye, prompting officials to intervene and ultimately disqualify Medvedev.

The unusual decision immediately changed the complexion of a match that had been closely contested. Djokovic, who had been battling through the semifinal, advanced without having to complete the contest on court.

Medvedev’s disqualification was one of the most striking moments of the China Open and added an unexpected twist to a match between two of the most experienced players on the ATP Tour. The Russian had been competing against Djokovic in a contest that featured long rallies and intense exchanges before the incident brought proceedings to an abrupt halt.

The situation also highlighted one of the difficult aspects of professional tennis. Players frequently hit balls into surrounding areas after points, particularly when reacting to frustration or attempting to release tension. However, the location and speed of the shot can create risks when spectators are positioned close to the court.

According to reports, Medvedev struck the ball after it came back towards him from the wall following the conclusion of a point. The ball travelled into the crowd and hit the spectator. Officials then took action, with the incident resulting in Medvedev’s removal from the tournament.

Djokovic was therefore able to move into the next stage without completing the semifinal. The Serbian’s progress was notable because the match had already developed into a demanding contest, with Medvedev taking the opening set 7-5 before Djokovic established an advantage in the second.

The circumstances of the ending overshadowed much of the tennis that had preceded it. Medvedev had shown his ability to challenge Djokovic from the baseline, while the Serbian had gradually worked his way back into the contest.

The first set demonstrated the competitive nature of the matchup. Medvedev’s consistency and ability to absorb pace allowed him to take the advantage, but Djokovic remained composed and continued to put pressure on his opponent in the following set.

By the time of the incident, Djokovic had moved to within one game of forcing the match deeper into the contest. Instead, the semifinal ended without a conventional conclusion.

The decision also placed renewed attention on player behaviour during matches. Tennis has strict rules governing conduct, and officials have the authority to penalise actions that endanger spectators, opponents or officials. In this case, the consequences were particularly significant because the incident occurred during a major tournament semifinal.

For Medvedev, the manner of his exit will be particularly disappointing. A place in the latter stages of a major ATP event had offered him an opportunity to strengthen his recent campaign, but the disqualification ended that possibility.

For Djokovic, the result represented another step forward at the tournament, although the Serbian did not receive the kind of competitive finish normally associated with a high-level semifinal.

The incident also created a difficult moment for everyone involved. Spectators attend professional tennis expecting to watch the action from relatively close range, particularly at tournaments where seating is positioned around the court. While stray balls are a known part of the sport, a ball travelling directly into the crowd can cause injury.

The China Open episode is likely to remain one of the tournament’s defining moments because of the unusual circumstances surrounding the result. Instead of a final exchange at match point, the contest ended through an official ruling.

For Djokovic, attention now turns to the next stage of the competition and maintaining his momentum. Medvedev, meanwhile, will have to move beyond a frustrating conclusion and prepare for his next tournament assignment.

The episode serves as a reminder that professional tennis can change dramatically in a matter of seconds. A match that had featured high-level competition between two established stars suddenly became a disciplinary matter, leaving Medvedev’s China Open campaign over and Djokovic through to the next stage.
