Mehbooba Mufti Condemns BJP’s Tactics in Maharashtra, Citing Fear of Opposition Unity

03-07-2023 : Mehbooba Mufti, the leader of the PDP, has criticized the BJP for its actions in Maharashtra, alleging that it is attempting to split the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) out of concern for the unity of the opposition. She made her statement after NCP leader Ajit Pawar and eight other party members joined the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government.

Mehbooba Mufti underlined her worries about the BJP’s actions, saying that they are harming India’s image as a vibrant democracy and a soft power on the international stage. She emphasized that such moves wouldn’t splinter the opposition’s cohesiveness, but would instead make it stronger.

The PDP president accused the ruling party of misusing agencies like the CBI and ED to threaten and dismantle the opposition. According to her, the fight is not merely between the opposition and the BJP but involves agencies like NIA, ED, and CBI as well. Despite the ruling party’s attempts, Mehbooba Mufti expressed confidence that the opposition will emerge victorious.

Highlighting the voting percentages, she pointed out that the opposition’s vote share is significantly higher than that of the NDA. However, she accused the ruling party of using money power and threats to manipulate and break other political parties.

Mehbooba Mufti criticized the BJP’s stance on the Uniform Civil Code, questioning the need for uniformity when there already exists a uniform criminal code. She urged the Centre to focus on implementing laws that protect and empower women instead.

Regarding price rise and unemployment, she called on the government to address these pressing issues and focus on policies that benefit the common people. She stated that if the proposed uniformity leads to lower tomato prices, the creation of job opportunities, and harsher punishments for rapists, the opposition would welcome it.

Mehbooba Mufti expressed her disapproval of the BJP’s tactics, claiming that they not only undermine the constitution but also democracy itself. She called for a united opposition and emphasized the importance of working toward the betterment of the nation and its people.
