MeT predicts week-long rain and snow as ‘Chillai Kalan’ ends in J&K
J&K braces for wet spell till Feb 4, temperatures rise amid cloud cover
Srinagar, 29-01-2025: As ‘Chillai Kalan’ draws to a close, the Meteorological Centre in Srinagar has predicted a prolonged spell of wet weather across Jammu and Kashmir, beginning Wednesday afternoon. The 40-day-long harshest phase of winter, which is set to conclude on January 30, remained largely dry this year except for two brief periods of snowfall. However, the approaching week is expected to bring significant changes in weather patterns, with intermittent rain and snow likely across the region.
According to the MeT department, widespread cloud cover will dominate the skies over Jammu and Kashmir from Wednesday afternoon, with the possibility of rain and snow showers. The intensity is expected to increase on Thursday, bringing fairly widespread light to moderate precipitation, including thunderstorms in some areas. While Friday is forecasted to be relatively dry with isolated light snowfall over higher reaches, another spell of fairly widespread rain and snow is likely on Saturday.
The wet conditions are predicted to persist until at least February 4, with a significant system bringing widespread rain and snow on February 3. This extended period of precipitation is expected to impact daily life, particularly in higher-altitude areas, where snowfall could lead to road closures and disruptions in transport services. The authorities have advised residents and travelers to stay updated on weather forecasts and exercise caution, especially in vulnerable regions prone to avalanches and landslides.
Meanwhile, the Kashmir Valley has witnessed a significant rise in nighttime temperatures due to the cloud cover. Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of 1.9°C on Tuesday night, a sharp increase from -4.3°C the previous night, making it 2.8°C above the seasonal average. The day temperature in the city on Tuesday stood at 6.2°C, which was higher than the normal of 7.9°C.
Other parts of the valley also saw an upward trend in temperatures. Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination, recorded a minimum temperature of -0.8°C, while the famous ski resort of Gulmarg stood at -2.5°C on Wednesday. This increase in temperature, while providing some relief from the intense cold, has also contributed to melting snow in certain areas, potentially affecting water availability in the coming months.
With the shifting weather pattern, the local administration is closely monitoring the situation to ensure minimal disruption to essential services. The ongoing winter tourism activities, particularly in places like Gulmarg and Sonamarg, may see fluctuations in visitor numbers depending on snowfall intensity. Farmers and horticulturists have also been advised to prepare for the upcoming precipitation, which could influence the agricultural cycle.
As the valley transitions from the peak winter phase of ‘Chillai Kalan’ to the relatively milder ‘Chillai Khurd,’ the coming days will be crucial in determining the overall impact of this extended wet spell on Jammu and Kashmir’s winter landscape.
