MACKAY, Aug 23: Mitchell Starc produced a devastating bowling performance as Australia defeated Bangladesh by an innings and 51 runs in the second Test at Mackay on Sunday, leveling the two match series 1-1.
Starc finished with 10 wickets in the match, including remarkable figures of 6-12 in Bangladesh’s first innings. His spell helped dismiss the visitors for just 64 before Australia secured a commanding advantage.
Bangladesh struggled again in their second innings, managing only 95 runs as Australia’s attack completed the victory in just two days. Nathan Lyon and Pat Cummins also made important contributions with the ball.
Starc reaches another milestone
The performance took Starc’s Test wicket tally to 445, moving him into 10th place on the all-time list of Test wicket-takers.
The left-arm quick was named Player of the Match and Player of the Series after making a decisive impact throughout the contest.
Bangladesh had entered the second Test with confidence after producing a surprise victory in Darwin in the opening match. However, Australia’s experienced bowling attack dominated the Mackay encounter from the start.
Bangladesh collapse after historic first-Test win
The visitors were unable to reproduce their earlier success as their batting line up struggled against Australia’s pace and bounce.
Shoriful Islam provided a bright spot for Bangladesh, claiming a career best 7-48, but Australia remained firmly in control.
The series is now level, setting up a decisive battle in the wider rivalry between the two teams. Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto said the contest highlighted the importance of playing more regular Test cricket against leading sides.
