Nalin Prabhat Takes Charge as J&K’s 18th DGP, Bringing Expertise in Counter-Insurgency

SRINAGAR, October 01: Senior IPS officer Nalin Prabhat officially assumed the role of Director General of Police (DGP) for Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, becoming the 18th DGP to take charge at the police headquarters in Srinagar. Prabhat succeeded R.R. Swain, who had held the position since 2023.

Upon his arrival, Prabhat was warmly received by senior officers from the department, with several top officials present to mark the occasion. A 1992 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Prabhat brings with him a wealth of experience, particularly in handling insurgency in Kashmir. His previous postings in Jammu and Kashmir have earned him respect and goodwill within the security forces.

Prabhat’s extensive experience includes serving as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the South Kashmir Operations Range and in the Srinagar sector of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). He also held the position of Inspector General (IG) of the Kashmir Operations Sector, CRPF. His distinguished service has been recognized with several honors, including the Antrik Suraksha Seva Padak and the Police (Special Duty) Medal and Bar for his contributions in J&K.

His predecessor, R.R. Swain, a 1991 batch IPS officer, had a significant tenure as DGP, having previously served as Special DG CID and Intelligence Chief of Jammu and Kashmir in 2020 before taking over the top post in 2023. Swain’s leadership played a pivotal role in shaping intelligence and counter-insurgency strategies during his term.

Prabhat’s appointment comes at a crucial time, with Jammu and Kashmir facing ongoing security challenges, and his deep knowledge of the region’s insurgency dynamics positions him as a key figure in ensuring law and order in the region.
