Nepal Airlines Issues Apology After J&K Shown Inside Pakistan on Route Map
National carrier removes controversial social media post, says incorrect depiction of international boundaries does not reflect Nepal’s official position
KATHMANDU, Apr 30: Nepal Airlines has issued a public apology after a social media post featuring a “network map” incorrectly showed Jammu and Kashmir as part of Pakistan, sparking criticism and controversy online.
The airline acknowledged the mistake on Thursday, describing it as a “cartographic inaccuracy” and clarifying that the depiction did not represent the official stance of either the Nepalese government or the national carrier.
In a statement shared on X, the airline said it sincerely regretted the error and had immediately removed the post from its social media platforms following public backlash.
“We sincerely apologise for the error in the network map recently shared on our social media channels. The map contained significant cartographic inaccuracies regarding international boundaries that do not reflect the official stance of Nepal or Nepal Airlines,” the statement read.
The airline further said an internal review had been initiated to ensure that future promotional and communication materials maintain proper accuracy and sensitivity regarding geopolitical matters.
Officials of the carrier stressed that Nepal values its ties with neighbouring countries and did not intend to offend sentiments through the disputed graphic.
“We deeply value our strong relationships with our neighbours and friends in the region and regret any offence the post has caused,” the airline added.
The controversy quickly gained attention on social media, with several users criticising the airline for sharing a map that incorrectly represented the status of Jammu and Kashmir. The post was deleted shortly after objections were raised online.
The incident comes at a time when cartographic representations involving Jammu and Kashmir remain a highly sensitive diplomatic issue in South Asia, often drawing strong reactions from governments and the public alike.
