NHL Probes Penalty Box Door Incident Involving Lightning’s Holmberg

Tampa Bay coach fumes as freak accident raises safety concerns during loss to Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The National Hockey League has initiated an inquiry after Tampa Bay Lightning forward Pontus Holmberg suffered a left arm injury following a collision with a faulty penalty box door during Monday night’s game against the Buffalo Sabres.

The incident unfolded in the third period of Tampa Bay’s 4-2 defeat when Holmberg, after a routine challenge from Buffalo’s Peyton Krebs, lost balance and slammed into the penalty box entrance. The door, which had been opened moments earlier, failed to shut properly and swung outward on impact, leading to the injury.

Officials immediately halted play with just over seven minutes remaining as Holmberg lay on the ice in discomfort. He was later ruled out for the remainder of the contest and was seen postgame with his arm supported in a sling.

The door had been opened to allow Sabres forward Zach Benson to rejoin play after serving a minor penalty. The sequence has since raised questions over operational lapses and in-game safety protocols.

Lightning head coach Jon Cooper reacted sharply, expressing concern over preventable incidents affecting player welfare. His brief postgame remarks reflected visible frustration as his team continues to deal with multiple injuries.

Teammate Brandon Hagel also voiced strong criticism, suggesting accountability should follow the mishap. The Lightning are already without key players, including captain Victor Hedman, Scott Sabourin, and Anthony Cirelli, further compounding their challenges.

The game itself saw frequent stoppages, with both sides combining for 13 minor penalties. Cooper pointed to inconsistent officiating as another factor disrupting rhythm and flow.

Unlike their previous high-scoring clash, this encounter lacked intensity, though it has now drawn attention for an off-ice error that could have serious implications for league procedures.
