Omar Abdullah Demands Answers on ‘Land for Landless’ Issue”, Calls for Clarity

Who Qualifies as Homeless in J&K? Omar Abdullah Challenges LG Administration

06-07-2023 : Omar Abdullah, the Vice-President of the National Conference and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, has raised questions regarding the “Land for Landless” issue and called on the Lieutenant Governor-led administration to provide clarity on who qualifies as homeless in J&K and how they are being categorized. During his visit to Budgam in Central Kashmir, Omar Abdullah expressed concerns about the categorization process and whether it includes individuals who have recently arrived in the region.

Omar Abdullah emphasized the importance of verifying the status of those who are considered homeless in J&K before allocating them accommodation on Kah Charai land. He suggested that individuals who have arrived in J&K after the revocation of Article 370 in 2019 should not be included in the scheme. He also expressed his awareness of the influx of outsiders brought into J&K by the government after August 2019 and raised questions about their inclusion in the homeless category.

When asked about the plans of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to impose a Uniform Civil Code, Omar Abdullah stated that the National Conference would never support any bills that harm the minority community in the country. This indicates the party’s stance on protecting the rights and interests of minority communities.

Regarding the upcoming hearing on Article 370 in the Supreme Court, Omar Abdullah clarified that the proceedings cannot occur overnight. He explained that the Supreme Court would first need to issue notices to the government, following which the proceedings would take place. Additionally, he mentioned that two Members of Parliament from the National Conference are petitioners in the case and that they will present arguments to seek justice for the people of J&K.
