Omar Abdullah Questions Prolonged Delay in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Polls, Urges Prime Minister Modi to Initiate ‘One Nation, One Election’ in UT

Srinagar, 15-02-2024 : Omar Abdullah, a prominent leader of the National Conference, raised questions about the prolonged delay in conducting assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting a decade-long hiatus since the last polls. Abdullah criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s advocacy for “one nation, one election,” suggesting that if Modi is committed to this idea, he should initiate it in Jammu and Kashmir. Expressing concerns over the extended wait for elections, Abdullah emphasized the urgency for democratic processes to be reinstated in the Union territory.

Addressing reporters, Abdullah underscored the significance of the prime minister’s upcoming visit to Jammu, anticipating insights into the developmental progress and the timeline for holding elections. He stressed the need for transparency regarding the execution of major projects and reiterated the National Conference’s eagerness to learn about the government’s plans for electoral conduct in Jammu and Kashmir.

Responding to allegations of the government’s purported use of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against opposition figures ahead of elections, Abdullah affirmed the party’s commitment to cooperating with probe agencies. He dismissed the notion of hindrance, stating that such processes have been ongoing and that the party will continue to engage with investigative authorities when required.

Reflecting on the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) electoral strategies, Abdullah expressed skepticism about their prospects in Jammu and Kashmir post-2019. He suggested that winning seats in the region would necessitate leveraging factors such as Modi’s popularity, religious sentiment, and financial resources. Abdullah criticized the BJP’s approach, alleging manipulation and malpractice in areas where electoral victory seems unlikely.

Highlighting instances of alleged electoral malpractice and manipulation in other regions, Abdullah cited examples such as the postponement of municipal elections in Mumbai and irregularities in Chandigarh. He emphasized the need for democratic integrity and transparency in electoral processes, condemning any attempts to undermine the democratic fabric of the nation.
