31-07-2023 : As the deadline for filing income tax returns approaches, the Income Tax Department has reported that more than 6 crore income tax returns (ITRs) have been filed for the assessment year 2022-23. Among these, 26.76 lakh returns were filed on July 30 alone, until 6.30 pm. The department further revealed that there were over 1.3 crore successful logins on the e-filing portal as of Sunday, 6.30 pm.
To support taxpayers with the ITR filing process, tax payment, and other related services, the department has set up a helpdesk operating 24×7. They are providing assistance through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions, and social media channels.
The deadline for filing income tax returns for the salaried class and those who are not required to get their accounts audited is July 31. Taxpayers who miss this deadline still have the option to file their returns by December 31, but they will be subject to a penalty of up to Rs 5,000.
The digital verification of a substantial number of returns by taxpayers has been beneficial for the Income Tax Department. It has expedited the processing of returns and facilitated quicker issuance of refunds.
As the deadline nears, taxpayers are encouraged to file their returns in a timely manner to avoid penalties and ensure smooth processing of their tax-related matters. The Income Tax Department’s online services and helpdesk are readily available to provide necessary support and guidance throughout the filing process.
