THIMPU, Nov 12: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the Kalachakra ‘Wheel of Time’ Empowerment ceremony in Bhutan, alongside King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and former King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, as part of the ongoing Global Peace Prayer Festival.
Modi described the event as “an important ritual with great cultural significance for Buddhists worldwide,” adding that the ceremony, presided over by His Holiness the Je Khenpo, was a special occasion for devotees and scholars attending the festival.
Earlier in the day, Modi met with Bhutan’s former King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, appreciating his “extensive efforts over the years to strengthen India-Bhutan relations.” The discussions covered cooperation in energy, trade, technology, and connectivity, with Modi lauding the progress of the Gelephu Mindfulness City Project, which aligns with India’s Act East Policy.
The Prime Minister also expressed gratitude for the former king’s counsel in enhancing the India-Bhutan friendship and conveyed best wishes for his health and long life, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.
Modi, on a two day visit to Bhutan, had earlier participated in celebrations at Changlimethang Stadium marking the 70th birth anniversary of the Fourth Druk Gyalpo. He emphasized the centuries old spiritual and cultural bonds shared by the two countries and reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.
