07-06-2023 : President Droupadi Murmu emphasized the long-standing understanding between India and Serbia about each other’s key interests during her state visit to Serbia. She gave a speech at a gathering of the local community in Belgrade, conveying warm greetings from the Indian government and people and expressing her joy at being in the stunning and ancient nation of Serbia.

Particularly in light of the Non-Aligned Movement, President Murmu emphasized the historical connections between Serbia and India. She cited the busts of Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, and Rabindranath Tagore that can be found in Belgrade, as well as the Tito roundabout and Josip Broz Tito Street in New Delhi and Jodhpur, as symbols of the two countries shared history.

Acknowledging the popularity of Indian movies in Serbia, President Murmu mentioned how Serbia has emerged as a new film destination for Indian filmmakers. She also recognized the deep affinity that many Serbians have for India’s spiritual heritage, including Yoga, and the recognition of Ayurveda as a system for cure and treatment in Serbia.

On the global stage, President Murmu emphasized India’s reputation as a responsible development partner, a first responder in times of crises, and a voice representing the Global South. These aspects reflect India’s aspirations to become a leading power. She noted India’s leading role in various areas, such as climate action, counter-terrorism, connectivity, maritime security, financial inclusion, and food security.

President Murmu’s visit to Serbia marked the first visit by an Indian President to the country. She received a special reception from President Aleksandar Vucic of Serbia, including a guard of honor at the Nikola Tesla Airport in Belgrade. Paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at his bust on Gandijeva Street, the President further interacted with the Indian community and Friends of India at a reception hosted by the Ambassador of India to Serbia, Sanjiv Kohli.

President Murmu expressed her gratitude to the Serbian Friends of India and recognised their essential contribution to deepening friendship and understanding between India and Serbia. She emphasised the importance of Serbia as a significant participant in India’s programmes for sustainable development cooperation. The goal of the President’s visit was to strengthen the already-solid bilateral relationship and promote more frequent communication with the Serbian government.
