Priyanka Gandhi Hits Out at Critics, Says Those Who Attacked Nehru Now Praise Him

Priyanka Gandhi Targets BJP, Says Critics of Nehru Now Quote Him

New Delhi, Mar 11: Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday criticised Union Minister Kiren Rijiju for quoting India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru during a debate in the Lok Sabha, saying those who regularly criticise Nehru are now invoking his words to support their arguments.

Debate During Motion Against Speaker

The remarks came during a discussion on the opposition’s resolution seeking the removal of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. While participating in the debate, Rijiju referred to Nehru’s comments made during a similar discussion in 1954 regarding a motion against then Speaker G.V. Mavalankar.

Quoting Nehru’s speech from that debate, Rijiju said the former prime minister had strongly criticised the resolution at the time and urged members to carefully read the document before supporting it.

Priyanka Responds to Rijiju’s Comment

Responding after the minister’s remarks, Priyanka Gandhi clarified that she had been smiling during the debate because she found it ironic that Nehru’s words were being used by those who frequently criticise him.

She said that leaders who often attack Nehru’s legacy were now citing his speeches and acknowledging his role in strengthening democratic institutions.

Exchange Sparks Political Jibes

During his speech, Rijiju also made a remark suggesting that the Congress might have performed better in Parliament if Priyanka Gandhi had been appointed Leader of the Opposition. He noted that she was present in the House and appeared attentive during the proceedings.

The exchange added to the heated political atmosphere surrounding the debate on the resolution against the Speaker, with both the ruling NDA and opposition members trading sharp comments in the Lok Sabha.
