New Delhi, 15-10-2024: The Congress party has officially announced that its General Secretary, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, will be contesting the upcoming Wayanad Lok Sabha by-election, marking her debut in electoral politics. The bypoll, scheduled for next month, comes after her brother, Rahul Gandhi, who previously held the seat, vacated it. During the general elections, Priyanka had campaigned extensively for Rahul in both Wayanad and Rae Bareli constituencies, where he emerged victorious. However, he chose to retain the Rae Bareli seat, leaving Wayanad open for the by-poll.
The Congress party’s statement confirmed that party president Mallikarjun Kharge approved Priyanka’s candidature for the seat. This long-awaited move fulfills Priyanka Gandhi’s desire to actively participate in electoral politics, a decision she had expressed interest in for some time.
In addition to Priyanka’s nomination, the Congress also announced candidates for other by-elections in Kerala: Rahul Mamkootathil for the Palakkad constituency and Ramya Haridas for the Chelakkara Assembly constituency. The party aims to strengthen its presence in the state by fielding prominent candidates in these critical bypolls.
