Qatar announces Pakistan-Afghanistan agreement on immediate ceasefire, follow up talks planned
Diplomatic breakthrough aims to ensure lasting peace and stability along the border
Doha, Oct 19 : Qatar announced on Saturday that Pakistan and Afghanistan have agreed to an “immediate ceasefire” following recent intense border clashes, with plans for follow up talks to ensure the ceasefire’s sustainability. The development comes after deadly violations along the border, including airstrikes in Afghanistan’s Paktika province that killed 17 people, including three cricketers.
In a statement, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the agreement was reached during negotiations in Doha, mediated by Qatar and Turkiye. Both countries also committed to holding further meetings to consolidate peace and verify the ceasefire’s implementation.
“A round of negotiations between the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and Afghanistan was held in Doha, mediated by the State of Qatar and the Republic of Turkiye. During the negotiations, the two sides agreed to an immediate ceasefire and the establishment of mechanisms to consolidate lasting peace and stability between the two countries,” the statement said.
The Qatari ministry emphasized that the talks are aimed at de-escalating border tensions and forming a solid foundation for sustainable peace in the region.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed the hope that this important step will contribute to ending tensions on the border between the two brotherly countries and form a solid foundation for sustainable peace in the region,” it added.
This diplomatic breakthrough follows a recent deadly incident in southeastern Afghanistan, highlighting the urgent need for a reliable and sustainable ceasefire to protect civilians and foster long-term stability.
