Safeguarding Kashmiri Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs): Masoodi Engages Union Finance Minister to Address Concerns over J&K Bank Transactions

10-08-2023 : In a recent meeting, Hasnain Masoodi, a prominent figure within the National Conference (NC) and a Member of Parliament (MP), engaged in a comprehensive dialogue with the Union Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman. The focal point of their conversation revolved around the predicament faced by Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) operating in the Kashmir region, particularly concerning their financial interactions with the Jammu and Kashmir Bank.

Of specific concern were the MSMEs located in Lassipora Pulwama and other areas of Kashmir. Masoodi drew attention to instances where the J&K Bank had resorted to coercive tactics to retrieve funds from certain small-scale sectors. One illustrative case recounted a family in Srinagar that was compelled to vacate their residence due to the bank’s forceful actions. While acknowledging the bank’s legitimate right to reclaim its dues, Masoodi emphasized the importance of conducting these processes in a humane manner.

Masoodi took this opportunity to appeal to the Union Finance Minister, urging her to intervene and address these pressing issues. He highlighted the need to establish a constructive and harmonious relationship between the realm of small businesses and the operations of the J&K Bank.

A significant point of reference during the discussion was the significance of Lassipora in Pulwama, which boasts more than 500 micro, small, and medium-scale industries. This establishes Lassipora as a pivotal hub for industrial growth within the Jammu and Kashmir region. Given the integral role that banking institutions play in nurturing industrial progress, Masoodi underscored the necessity for banks to adhere closely to the directives issued by the Reserve Bank of India.
