Sajad Gani Lone’s Strategic Appeal: Consolidating Anti-NC Votes in North Kashmir for Lok Sabha Elections

Navigating Electoral Dynamics: Sajad Gani Lone's Plea for Apni Party's Collaboration to Challenge NC's Hold in North Kashmir

Srinagar, 20-04-2024: Sajad Gani Lone, the president of the People’s Conference, has made a strategic plea to the Apni Party (JKAP) to refrain from fielding a candidate in the north Kashmir constituency during the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. His aim is to consolidate the anti-National Conference (NC) vote share, preventing its fragmentation and effectively challenging the NC’s stronghold. In a press conference, Lone underscored the persistent dominance of the NC in securing parliamentary seats despite a significant drop in its vote share to 29 percent in 2019. Out of 10 MPs from north Kashmir, 9 belong to the NC, a trend attributed to vote fragmentation.

Lone provided statistical insights, revealing that in the 2019 elections, the NC received 1.33 lakh votes out of 4.55 lakh total votes in north Kashmir, representing 29 percent. However, a substantial 71 percent of votes were against them. He urged Altaf Bukhari, president of the Apni Party, to consider supporting the People’s Conference in north Kashmir, pledging reciprocal support elsewhere, particularly in Srinagar. Regardless of the Apni Party’s decision, the People’s Conference intends to extend support to them.

When queried about alliances with other parties, Sajad indicated discussions with leaders from the Apni Party, prioritizing transparency in sharing intentions. He emphasized the Apni Party’s cooperation in north Kashmir for consolidating anti-NC votes.

Regarding the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) electoral significance, Sajad dismissed its impact in Kashmir, citing past results where it secured minimal votes—1.2 percent in North Kashmir and 0.2 percent in Srinagar. He underscored the need for a 6 percent vote share to influence outcomes in north Kashmir, which the BJP lacks, emphasizing its marginal electoral significance in the region compared to its national stature.

Responding to criticism from Omar Abdullah, Sajad emphasized representing the people’s interests and urged Omar to refrain from disparaging the Kashmiri populace. He called for focusing on substantive issues rather than engaging in personal attacks.
