Scorching Heat Wave Sweeps Jammu Region; Samba Sizzles at 44°C

JAMMU, June 8: A relentless heat wave continues to tighten its grip across the Jammu region, with Samba emerging as the hottest spot, recording a blistering 44 degrees Celsius — the highest temperature in the area so far this season. The Meteorological Department has forecast continued severe heat wave conditions for the next five days, with a possibility of slight relief through windstorms and thundershowers in some areas on the evening of June 9.

According to Dr. Mahender Singh, Chief Scientist of the Agrometeorology Department at SKUAST-Jammu, Jammu witnessed its highest temperature of the season on Sunday, and temperatures are likely to climb even further over the next 5-6 days. While minor weather disturbances such as windstorms and short rain spells are expected Monday evening, they are unlikely to significantly lower the prevailing heat.

Dr. Singh warned of the growing threat posed by increasing levels of ultra-violet radiation, stressing that exposure to direct sunlight — particularly between 11 AM and 4 PM — could have adverse health effects. Vulnerable sections of the population, especially children and the elderly, should avoid outdoor exposure during peak hours. He also advised the public to stay hydrated and consume ample fluids to cope with the rising heat.

Addressing questions about the onset of monsoon, Dr. Singh added that the monsoon has advanced by about a week this year and is likely to reach Jammu and Kashmir around the third week of June. Pre-monsoon showers are expected in Jammu around June 20–21.

A spokesperson from the Meteorological Department confirmed that the weather will remain largely dry and extremely hot over the next five days. On Sunday, Jammu recorded a maximum temperature of 42.7°C — its highest for the season so far — compared to 40.2°C on Saturday.

Other parts of the region also experienced searing heat. Samba nearly touched 44°C, maintaining its lead as the hottest area. Katra recorded 38.2°C, Reasi 38.5°C, Rajouri 35.9°C, Poonch 35.4°C, Bhaderwah 31.8°C, Banihal 32.5°C, Batote 32.3°C, and Kishtwar 30.9°C. In Kashmir, Srinagar registered 31.9°C, nearly 4 degrees above the average for this time of year, while tourist destinations like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Kokernag recorded 22.2°C, 27.8°C, and 30.9°C respectively.

With no immediate respite in sight, the public is urged to take necessary precautions to stay safe from the intensifying summer heat.
