Shreyas Iyer Admits India Were Outplayed After Shock Defeat to Ireland

Indian skipper admits visitors misread conditions after Ireland complete memorable 2-0 series sweep at Stormont.

New Delhi: Ireland created history by defeating India by one run in the second T20 International at Stormont, completing a remarkable 2-0 series sweep and registering their maiden T20I bilateral series victory over the reigning world champions.

The result marked one of the biggest surprises in recent T20 cricket and handed newly appointed India captain Shreyas Iyer a disappointing start to his leadership tenure. With consecutive defeats in his first two matches as captain, Iyer became only the second Indian skipper after Rishabh Pant to lose each of his opening two T20Is in charge.

Chasing a target of 155, India faltered under pressure and were bowled out for 153 despite a spirited late effort from Harshit Rana, who struck 21 runs off just 10 deliveries. The defeat also ended India’s impressive run of 16 consecutive T20I series victories, a streak that had remained intact since 2023.

Following the match, Iyer acknowledged Ireland’s superior performance and praised the hosts for making better use of the playing conditions.

“It was certainly not the kind of series we wanted, but full credit to Ireland. They understood the wicket exceptionally well, fielded brilliantly and deserved the victory,” the Indian captain said during the post-match presentation.

He admitted that India’s batting unit struggled to adjust to the surface, while Ireland capitalised on every opportunity throughout the contest.

According to Iyer, India’s bowlers largely executed their plans successfully by restricting Ireland to a manageable total, but the batters failed to read the pitch correctly and missed crucial scoring opportunities.

“Our bowlers delivered an excellent performance. However, we couldn’t analyse the nature of the wicket properly during the chase. We also failed to convert singles into doubles, and Ireland clearly outplayed us in those aspects,” he remarked.

India’s chase suffered an early collapse after Ireland’s Jai Moondra produced a sensational spell. The Rajasthan-born software engineer representing Ireland dismissed Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma off successive first deliveries before removing Iyer cheaply to leave India reeling at 35 for four.

Although Tilak Varma produced a determined half-century to keep India’s hopes alive, regular wickets prevented the visitors from building lasting partnerships. Ireland maintained discipline with both bat and ball to defend the modest total successfully.

Earlier, Ireland posted 154 for eight after being asked to bat first. Harry Tector anchored the innings with a composed 53 in his milestone 100th T20I appearance. India fought back well through debutant Prince, who claimed three wickets, while Shivam Dube chipped in with two scalps to restrict the hosts from posting a bigger total.

Despite the disappointing series, Iyer expressed confidence in the young players who made their international debuts during the tour. He praised Prince for carrying forward his IPL form and said newcomers would gain valuable experience from competing at the international level.

“Prince showed great confidence and brought the experience he gained in the IPL. Suryansh also played his first international match, and these experiences will certainly help them develop further,” Iyer said.

The Indian captain also thanked the Irish supporters for their warm reception throughout the tour, describing the visit as a memorable experience despite the disappointing results.

For Ireland, the series triumph represents a landmark achievement in their cricketing history and further highlights the rapid progress of the team on the international stage. For India, however, the unexpected defeat raises important questions as the team prepares for its upcoming assignments under new leadership.
