Sonia Gandhi Visits Police Station to Meet Detained Priyanka Gandhi
Congress parliamentary leaders were detained after a sit-in near the Prime Minister's residence, while Sonia Gandhi later visited Priyanka Gandhi Vadra at Mandir Marg police station.
NEW DELHI, July 21: Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday night visited the Mandir Marg police station to meet her daughter, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who was detained along with several party leaders after a protest near the Prime Minister’s residence.
Sonia Gandhi spent time with Priyanka Gandhi and other detained Congress leaders, including Rajya Sabha MP Deepender Singh Hooda and party spokesperson Supriya Srinate, at the police station.
Police dispersed the protesting leaders after the demonstration and shifted them to different locations. While Priyanka Gandhi and several Congress members were taken to the Mandir Marg police station, others were moved to the Kingsway Camp police station. Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and a few senior leaders were taken to Chhatrasal Stadium in Model Town.
The detentions followed a surprise sit-in staged by Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and leaders from several opposition parties outside the Prime Minister’s residence. The protest prompted Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh and Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan to visit the site in an effort to persuade the demonstrators to vacate the high-security area.
Jitendra Singh held a brief discussion with Rahul Gandhi, but the talks failed to produce a breakthrough. After the officials left the venue, police moved in and detained Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and several other opposition leaders, bringing the protest to an end.
