Sonia Gandhi’s Strategic Move: Rahul Gandhi to Lead Opposition in the 18th Lok Sabha, Announced by INDIA Bloc Leaders

New Delhi, 25-06-2024 : Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been appointed as the Leader of Opposition in the 18th Lok Sabha, putting an end to days of speculation. The decision was reached during a meeting of floor leaders from the INDIA bloc parties held in Delhi.

K.C. Venugopal, a senior party leader, announced the appointment, stating that Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi had communicated the decision to Pro-tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab. In her letter, Sonia Gandhi informed the Pro-tem Speaker of Rahul Gandhi’s new role as the Leader of Opposition.

This appointment marks a significant moment for the Congress party, which, as the single largest opposition party, secures the post of opposition leader after a decade. In the last two elections, the party had failed to meet the 10 percent member requirement in the Lok Sabha necessary to claim this position.

Rahul Gandhi, who has served as a Member of Parliament for five terms, currently represents the Rae Bareli constituency in the Lok Sabha. His extensive parliamentary experience and leadership within the Congress party are seen as pivotal as he takes on this new role in the Lok Sabha.
