J&K Weather Update: Light to Moderate Rain and Snowfall Predicted Over Next Three Days
Srinagar, 20-01-2025: The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar has predicted scattered light to moderate rain and snowfall across Jammu and Kashmir over the next three days, starting Monday. Weather conditions are expected to remain generally cloudy, with intermittent light rain and snow likely at various locations in the region during the initial 24 hours. On January 22, a fresh spell of light to moderate rainfall is expected in the plains of Jammu, accompanied by snowfall in several areas across Jammu and Kashmir. Higher altitudes, including the Chenab Valley and the Pir Panjal Range, are also anticipated to experience light to moderate snowfall during this period. Another round of similar weather activity is projected for January 23, bringing light to moderate rain in the plains and snowfall in multiple areas.
From January 24 to 28, the weather is expected to remain predominantly dry, offering relief from precipitation. However, there is a slight possibility of isolated light rain and snow between January 29 and 31, according to the Meteorological Department.
Meanwhile, night temperatures across the region continue to fluctuate. Many locations recorded sub-zero temperatures, while some areas in the Kashmir Valley experienced slightly above-average readings. Srinagar registered a minimum temperature of -3.2°C, compared to -1°C the previous night, marking a drop of 1.2°C below the seasonal average. Gulmarg, the popular ski resort in Baramulla district, maintained a low of -7.8°C for the second consecutive night, which was 2.4°C above the usual temperature for this time of year.
In Pahalgam, often referred to as the Valley of Shepherds, the night temperature dropped to -6.4°C, compared to -3°C the previous night, slightly below the normal by 0.1°C. Qazigund, situated on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, saw a marginal decrease to -3°C from the previous night’s -2.8°C, though it remained 0.1°C above the average for the area. Kupwara district recorded a slight improvement in its minimum temperature at -1.4°C, up from -2.6°C the night before, which was 1.5°C higher than the average for this period.
Kokernag in south Kashmir also experienced an improvement, with temperatures rising to -2.4°C from -3.4°C the previous night, registering 1.1°C above the seasonal average. These temperature variations reflect the dynamic and unpredictable nature of winter weather across the region. Residents and visitors, especially in higher altitudes, are advised to remain prepared for changing conditions, particularly during the forecasted periods of rain and snowfall.
