Srinagar Records Season’s Coldest Night as Temperature Dips Below –4°C
Mercury slips to –4.4°C in Srinagar, –6.5°C in Shopian, while Zojila Pass freezes at 16°C amid intensifying winter chill.
Srinagar, Nov 27: A fresh spell of intense cold tightened its grip over Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, with temperatures plunging sharply across the region on Wednesday night, according to data compiled by Kashmir Weather.
In the Kashmir Valley, several areas remained well below the freezing point. Srinagar recorded –4.4°C, marking its coldest night of the season. Shopian reported one of the lowest temperatures at –6.5°C, followed by Pulwama and Baramulla (–5.8°C), Pampore (–5.5°C), and Anantnag (–5.7°C). Srinagar Airport dipped to –5.2°C, while Pahalgam touched –5.0°C.
Other stations also witnessed sub-zero temperatures, including Budgam (–4.6°C), Bandipora (–4.5°C), Awantipora and Sonamarg (–4.0°C), Ganderbal (–3.3°C), Qazigund (–4.0°C), and Kokernag (–1.6°C). Gulmarg remained relatively higher at –1.0°C, while Kulgam settled at –2.4°C. Zethan Rafiabad dipped to –5.2°C.
The coldest point in the entire region was Zojila Pass, which froze at a bone-chilling –16.0°C.
Jammu Region
In the plains of Jammu, temperatures stayed above freezing: Jammu (8.7°C), Katra (8.5°C), Kathua (8.2°C), and Jammu Airport (10.1°C).
Upper reaches remained considerably colder with Banihal (–1.5°C), Bhaderwah (0.4°C), Batote (4.0°C), Ramban (4.1°C), Rajouri (2.0°C), Kishtwar (3.4°C), Reasi (6.9°C), Samba (6.9°C), and Udhampur (4.6°C).
Ladakh
Severe winter conditions continued in Ladakh as Leh dropped to –8.6°C, Kargil to –9.5°C, and Nubra to –7.7°C, signalling a deeper descent into the seasonal freeze.
