Statehood First, Power Later: Ghulam Ahmed Mir Reaffirms Congress Stance in J&K
People's Mandate Must Be Respected: Ghulam Ahmed Mir Calls on PM Modi to Restore J&K Statehood
Srinagar, 16-10-2024: Senior Congress leader Ghulam Ahmed Mir reaffirmed the party’s unwavering stance on the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, stating that the Congress would not take the oath of office until full statehood is reinstated. Emphasizing that this position is non-negotiable, Mir reiterated the party’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of J&K’s citizens.
Addressing rumors of discord between the Congress and its alliance partner, the National Conference (NC), over ministerial portfolios, Mir firmly dismissed such claims. “Our participation in this election was not about gaining power but about restoring the rights of the people. Ministerial posts are irrelevant at this stage. Our focus remains solely on statehood restoration,” he stated.
Mir called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to respect the mandate given by the people, which he believes clearly indicates a demand for the return of statehood. “The people of Jammu and Kashmir have made their voices heard, and it’s now the Prime Minister’s responsibility to honor their will,” he urged.
Despite the decision not to take the oath immediately, Mir stressed that the Congress remains an integral part of the government. “We are fully committed to our alliance within the INDIA bloc, including leaders like Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi. We are united in our efforts to achieve our shared objectives,” he concluded.
