‘Sumo Didi’ Brings Hetal Dave’s Journey to the Screen, Highlights Women’s Fight Against Gender Stereotypes

Shriyam Bhagnani stars in the biographical sports drama inspired by India’s first professional female sumo wrestler, whose pursuit of international competition challenged conventional expectations of women in sport.

Mumbai, Oct 23: Sumo Didi, a Hindi biographical sports drama inspired by the life of Hetal Dave, India’s first professional female sumo wrestler, premiered on ZEE5 on Friday. Starring Shriyam Bhagnani in the lead role, the film traces a woman’s determination to pursue an unconventional sporting career despite social pressure, body shaming and gender based stereotypes.

Directed by Jayant Rohatgi, the film follows Dave’s journey from a young woman with an unusual sporting ambition to an athlete determined to represent India in sumo wrestling. The narrative focuses on the obstacles she encounters while attempting to establish herself in a discipline that has traditionally received limited recognition in India.

The film’s central theme is the struggle to pursue a personal ambition when family expectations and social attitudes point in a different direction. Dave’s interest in sumo challenges conventional ideas about women’s participation in sport, particularly in a discipline in which body size, strength and physical contact are essential elements of competition.

The trailer introduces a young woman whose athletic ambitions are questioned by people around her. Her weight becomes a subject of criticism, while those in her immediate social environment encourage her to consider a more conventional future. Marriage and socially accepted career choices are presented as alternatives to her sporting aspirations.

However, Dave remains committed to the goal of competing internationally. Her determination to transform what others regard as a disadvantage into a sporting strength forms the emotional foundation of the film.

According to the film’s director, the project was conceived as an underdog story about resilience and challenging entrenched social expectations. Rohatgi said Dave’s experiences offered an opportunity to examine patriarchy, gender bias and the pressures women face when they choose paths outside established norms.

Bhagnani, who plays Dave, described the role as a significant responsibility in her career. The actor said portraying the athlete required her to engage with a complex character and regarded the experience as one of the most challenging and rewarding assignments she had undertaken.

For Bhagnani, the role represents an opportunity to lead a feature film while bringing the story of a sportsperson to a wider audience. The character requires the portrayal of determination and vulnerability, as Dave navigates criticism while remaining focused on her ambitions.

The supporting cast includes Chaitanya Sharma, Anubha Fatehpura, Nitesh Pandey, Raghav Dhir and Meenal Kapoor. Their performances contribute to the family and social environment surrounding the protagonist, where her choices are influenced by the expectations of people close to her.

The film was produced under the banners of Jio Studios, Fresh Lime Films and Myth Entertainment Networks. Portions were shot in Japan, Kolkata and Mumbai, reflecting the geographical journey associated with Dave’s sporting ambitions.

Japan provides a particularly relevant backdrop to a story about sumo, a sport deeply associated with the country’s sporting culture. For an Indian woman attempting to establish herself in the discipline, the pursuit of training and international competition involves more than developing physical ability. It also means entering a sporting environment in which she must prove herself while dealing with the limited visibility of women’s sumo in her home country.

Dave’s real-life journey has attracted attention because she entered a field in which women from India have had few established pathways. In an interview published by The Indian Express in 2025, she described herself as India’s first and only female professional sumo wrestler and spoke about the long struggle to gain recognition and employment after years devoted to the sport.

That background gives the film a wider significance beyond its sporting narrative. The story raises questions about how society recognises athletes whose disciplines fall outside the mainstream, and how gender expectations can affect access to training, financial backing and professional opportunities.

In many sports, the challenges facing women include limited institutional support and assumptions about which physical activities are considered appropriate for them. Sumo wrestling presents an especially visible challenge to conventional expectations because its competitive requirements do not conform to familiar ideas about women’s appearance or physicality.

Dave’s journey illustrates the difference between an athlete’s physical characteristics and the assumptions others make about them. In sumo, size and strength can be important competitive attributes. The film uses the protagonist’s experience to question why characteristics that can support sporting success are sometimes treated as shortcomings in everyday social settings.

The narrative also examines the role of family expectations. The pressure to prioritise marriage or a socially conventional career reflects the tension that can arise when an individual chooses a demanding professional path that is unfamiliar to those around them. For women, such choices can attract scrutiny that extends beyond questions of talent or performance.

Rather than focusing solely on victories, the film follows the persistence required to keep pursuing a goal when acceptance is not guaranteed. The training sequences shown in the trailer emphasise the physical effort involved, while the protagonist’s interactions with people around her highlight the emotional cost of repeatedly defending her ambitions.

The biographical format allows the filmmakers to connect an individual’s experiences with broader questions about opportunity and representation. Dave’s story becomes an example of how athletes can create a place for themselves in disciplines where they have limited precedents to follow.

The film’s direct-to-digital release also makes it accessible to viewers who may not regularly encounter sumo wrestling through mainstream Indian sports coverage. By presenting the sport through a character-driven narrative, the makers seek to introduce audiences to an athlete whose career challenges familiar ideas about sporting identity.

Sumo Didi has also been screened at international film festivals, including the Tokyo International Film Festival and the Palm Springs International Film Festival, before its ZEE5 premiere.

Its release comes at a time when biographical sports films continue to provide a way of exploring the personal struggles behind athletic achievements. Such stories can introduce audiences to lesser-known sports while examining the sacrifices involved in pursuing professional competition.

The film’s focus on Dave distinguishes it from stories built around established sporting celebrities. Her journey is not only about reaching a competitive goal but also about challenging the social assumptions that can determine who is encouraged to participate in sport and whose ambitions are taken seriously.

For viewers, the central question is whether determination can overcome the combined weight of social criticism, family pressure and limited opportunities. The story does not present the pursuit of a sporting career as an easy route to acceptance; instead, it focuses on the persistence needed to continue when the surrounding environment is discouraging.

With Bhagnani leading the cast, Rohatgi directing and Dave’s real-life experiences providing the foundation, Sumo Didi brings a relatively unfamiliar sporting discipline into the Hindi entertainment space.

The film began streaming on ZEE5 on October 23, 2026. Its central message revolves around self-belief, resilience and the right to pursue a goal regardless of whether it fits conventional expectations.
