12-02-2023 : Twenty severe weather alerts and watches are in effect as tropical storm Gabrielle makes landfall far to the north of New Zealand and is predicted to sweep through the majority of the North Island starting on Sunday.
On that day, MetService, the nation’s national meteorological service, issued a warning that the worst weather is still to come, upgrading Auckland and many other locations in the area to red alert, according to Xinhua News Agency.
The government encouraged homeowners to stockpile sandbags to cushion their homes, save food and water, and be ready for required evacuations in the coming days. They also cautioned that many portions of the North Island, including the largest and most populous metropolis Auckland, would be impacted destructively.
