TVK Government Secures Trust Vote Amid Opposition Turmoil in Tamil Nadu

Congress, Left parties and AIADMK rebel faction support Vijay-led government as DMK stages walkout during floor test

CHENNAI, May 13: The newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government led by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay comfortably won the trust vote in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Wednesday, securing 144 votes in favour against 22 opposing votes amid dramatic political developments and shifting alliances.
The confidence motion, moved by Chief Minister Vijay shortly after the House assembled, was passed in the 234 member Assembly with support from Congress, Left parties, VCK, IUML, AMMK and a rebel faction of the AIADMK. The simple majority mark in the Assembly stands at 118.
Speaker JCD Prabhakar announced the results after division-wise voting, stating that 144 MLAs supported the motion, while 22 voted against it and five legislators maintained a neutral stand.
The principal opposition DMK, which has 59 MLAs, walked out of the Assembly before voting commenced, protesting the political developments surrounding the formation of the new government.
The floor test marked the first major challenge for the four-day-old TVK administration, which had faced questions over its stability due to its initial lack of a clear majority in the House.
The ruling TVK currently has an effective strength of 107 legislators, including the Speaker, who did not cast a vote. Additionally, the party’s Tirupattur MLA R Seenivasa Sethupathy was barred from participating in the trust vote following a Madras High Court order linked to an election dispute petition filed by a defeated DMK candidate seeking recounting of votes.
The Vijay-led administration managed to strengthen its numbers after receiving outside support from Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML. A breakaway faction of the AIADMK led by senior leaders SP Velumani and C Ve Shanmugam also backed the government during the confidence motion.
However, AIADMK MLAs loyal to party chief Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government and reiterated that anti-defection provisions would apply to legislators defying the party line.
The BJP’s lone MLA remained neutral during the voting process, while PMK legislators abstained from participating in the exercise.
Independent MLA S Kamaraj, who was expelled from the TTV Dhinakaran-led AMMK, also voted in support of the government.
Replying to the debate on the motion, Chief Minister Vijay asserted that his administration would remain secular and continue welfare programmes initiated by previous governments in the state.
He said the government intended to function with speed and efficiency while rejecting allegations of political horse-trading. “Our government works with horse-speed, not through horse-trading,” Vijay remarked during his address in the House.
The Governor had earlier directed the government to prove its majority on or before May 13 following the swearing-in of the TVK ministry after the recent Assembly elections.
Political observers believe the successful floor test gives the Vijay-led government breathing space to stabilise its administration and focus on governance. Ministers in the cabinet are yet to receive portfolio allocations, which are expected in the coming days.
As per Assembly norms, another trust vote cannot ordinarily be sought for the next six months unless exceptional constitutional circumstances arise.
The dramatic proceedings also exposed widening cracks within the AIADMK, with rival factions openly taking different positions during the crucial vote, adding a new dimension to Tamil Nadu’s evolving political landscape.
