Two Big Hindi Releases Hit Theatres as Batwara 1947 and Awarapan 2 Face Off
Sunny Deol's Partition drama and Emraan Hashmi's action thriller arrive together, setting up a major Independence Day weekend box-office battle.
NEW DELHI, Aug 14: The Hindi film industry is witnessing a major box-office clash as Batwara 1947 and Awarapan 2 arrived in theatres on Friday, giving moviegoers two sharply different options for the Independence Day weekend.
Starring Sunny Deol, Batwara 1947 explores the emotional and human consequences of Partition. The film, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, was earlier titled Lahore 1947 before being renamed. Its story draws from Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai.
On the other side, Emraan Hashmi returns to one of his most recognised franchises with Awarapan 2. The sequel to the 2007 gangster drama brings back the emotional intensity associated with the original while introducing a new chapter in its story.
Early audience interest has already translated into a strong lead for Awarapan 2 in advance bookings. The film reportedly crossed ₹11 crore in pre-sales, while Batwara 1947 recorded comparatively lower advance bookings ahead of release.
The unusual clash also features veteran actor Shabana Azmi in both films. Reflecting on the coincidence, Azmi recalled experiencing a similar situation in 1983 when two of her films released together.
With the Independence Day holiday providing an important boost to theatrical footfall, both productions will now look to convert audience interest into strong weekend collections. The contrasting genres also give viewers a choice between a historical drama and an action-oriented emotional thriller.
The box-office performance of the two films over the extended weekend is expected to determine which release emerges as the stronger theatrical draw.
