UGC Announces Nationwide Faculty Development Programme on Artificial Intelligence
Universities to train teachers in AI-powered learning, digital classrooms and emerging education technologies
New Delhi, Jul 29: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced a nationwide Faculty Development Programme (FDP) to help higher education institutions integrate artificial intelligence and digital technologies into teaching practices.
The programme will be conducted in collaboration with leading IITs, central universities and technical institutions. It aims to equip college and university teachers with practical knowledge of AI applications, data analytics, virtual learning tools and digital content development.
The UGC said the initiative supports India’s vision of creating a future ready education ecosystem under the National Education Policy. Faculty members will participate in online and offline training sessions, workshops and certification courses over the coming months.
Officials noted that artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming classrooms, research methodologies and academic administration. Teachers will therefore be trained to use AI responsibly while maintaining academic integrity and ethical standards.
The commission also plans to introduce specialised modules covering generative AI, adaptive learning platforms, digital assessment methods and cybersecurity awareness for educators.
Vice chancellors of universities have been encouraged to nominate faculty members from multiple disciplines to ensure wider participation. Institutions completing the programme will receive implementation guidelines for introducing AI-supported teaching practices on their campuses.
Education experts believe the initiative will improve digital literacy among educators and prepare students for technology-driven careers. They added that continuous faculty training is essential as educational technologies continue to evolve rapidly.
The programme is expected to strengthen innovation, improve classroom effectiveness and promote greater collaboration between higher education institutions and the country’s technology ecosystem.
