UGC Directs Universities to Strengthen Accessibility for Students with Disabilities
Higher education institutions asked to comply with disability rights law and submit admission and recruitment data by September 30.
New Delhi, Sept. 15: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed universities and higher education institutions to ensure strict compliance with provisions protecting the rights of persons with disabilities, with a focus on creating more accessible and inclusive campuses.
The commission has asked institutions to strengthen measures for students and employees with disabilities and ensure that statutory provisions under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, are properly implemented.
Universities have been advised to ensure compliance with reservation provisions and establish mechanisms to address the specific needs of persons with disabilities. Institutions are also expected to work towards creating barrier-free campuses so that students can access classrooms, facilities and other academic resources without unnecessary obstacles.
As part of the exercise, higher education institutions have been asked to provide comprehensive information regarding the admission and recruitment of persons with disabilities. The data is required to be submitted by September 30.
The latest direction comes amid growing emphasis on making higher education more equitable and accessible. Universities are expected to review their existing facilities and institutional mechanisms and take appropriate steps wherever gaps are identified.
The move is aimed at strengthening implementation of disability rights provisions across higher education and ensuring that students with disabilities receive equal opportunities in academic and professional settings.
The UGC’s directions also underline the importance of institutional accountability in promoting an inclusive educational environment.
