Ukraine Strikes Crimea, Killing Four, Fuel Sales Suspended

Kyiv says military and energy sites were targeted in one of the largest assaults on the peninsula in recent months; Russian strikes claim three lives in eastern Ukraine.

Moscow, June 22: Four people were killed and 28 others injured after a large scale Ukrainian drone attack struck the Russian controlled Crimean peninsula, prompting local authorities to suspend fuel sales and triggering power outages in several areas, officials said on Sunday.

Sergey Aksyonov, the Moscow installed governor of Crimea, said the casualties occurred on the Kerch peninsula, which lies close to the Russian mainland. He described the attack as one of the most serious recent assaults on the region.

Ukraine said the operation targeted military infrastructure and energy facilities on the Black Sea peninsula, which serves as a critical logistics hub for Russia’s military campaign. Kyiv maintains that its long range strikes are aimed at weakening Russia’s war capabilities and rejects accusations of deliberately targeting civilians.

The attacks also disrupted electricity supplies, with local utility company Krymenergo reporting outages in parts of the peninsula. Authorities moved to halt fuel sales amid concerns over supply and security following the barrage.

Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014, a move that remains internationally unrecognised. Since the start of the conflict, the peninsula has repeatedly been targeted by Ukrainian forces seeking to undermine Russian military operations.

Meanwhile, overnight Russian attacks in eastern Ukraine killed three people, according to local officials, underscoring the continuing escalation of hostilities between the two sides.
