UP Guv Urges Students to Understand Gandhi’s Freedom Struggle Role, Express Views Freely
Governor highlights Gandhi’s teachings, academic support, student communication skills and cleanliness during school interaction
LUCKNOW, Oct 1: Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel on Thursday urged students to gain a clear understanding of Mahatma Gandhi’s contribution to India’s freedom movement and develop the confidence to express their thoughts effectively.
Patel made the remarks while interacting with students of Adarsh Madhyamik Vidyalaya at Jan Bhavan, a day before Gandhi Jayanti and the birth anniversary of former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, observed on October 2.
She said students should be familiar with the major movements launched by Gandhi, the circumstances behind them, their objectives and their impact on the country’s struggle for independence.
“Students should know when Gandhiji launched which movement, under what circumstances, what its objective was and what impact it had on the freedom movement,” Patel said, according to a statement issued by Jan Bhavan.
The governor also emphasised the role of teachers in helping students develop a strong grasp of their subjects before they speak or participate in discussions. She said academic understanding should go hand in hand with the ability to communicate ideas clearly.
Patel highlighted Gandhi’s life as an example of how determination, discipline and sustained effort can help individuals achieve significant goals despite coming from ordinary circumstances.
“If you want to progress in life, you will have to work hard,” she said.
She also called for schools to work towards achieving full results and attendance among Class 10 students. Teachers were advised to identify pupils who require additional academic support and arrange extra classes and focused instruction for them.
The governor further stressed the importance of regular health checks for students, first-aid training for teachers, nutritious meals and proper cleanliness in school premises.
Referring to Gandhi’s emphasis on cleanliness, Patel encouraged students to maintain personal hygiene and take responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean.
During the programme, students also spoke about Lal Bahadur Shastri and highlighted his simple lifestyle, honesty, humility, discipline and dedication to public service.
