US-India Partnership Crucial for Global Security: Ambassador Gor After Meeting NSA Doval
US envoy Sergio Gor holds talks with NSA Ajit Doval as New Delhi and Washington push to deepen cooperation in defence, trade and energy security.
NEW DELHI, Aug 11: US Ambassador Sergio Gor on Tuesday said the partnership between Washington and New Delhi is crucial to tackling global security challenges after holding talks with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
Gor described his meeting with Doval as “fruitful” and said the two countries were working to deepen their strategic cooperation while pursuing several shared objectives.
“Had a fruitful meeting with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to discuss deepening US-India strategic cooperation,” Gor said in a social media post.
“Our close partnership with India is vital to addressing global security challenges. The United States and India share many of the same goals and our engagement continues to grow,” he added.
The meeting followed Gor’s discussions with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri a day earlier, reflecting intensified high-level engagement between the two countries.
Gor’s meetings with senior Indian officials came shortly after US Vice President JD Vance spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi about strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in trade, defence and energy security, against the backdrop of heightened tensions in West Asia.
The recent defence agreement signed by Turkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan has also drawn attention to changing strategic alignments in the region. It was not immediately clear whether the pact was discussed during Gor’s meetings in New Delhi.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the discussions focused on the broader comprehensive global strategic partnership between India and the US.
“There are various elements of it where progress is happening, and both sides remain committed to strengthening ties in areas of trade, defence, energy security, critical minerals and other such areas,” Jaiswal said at a media briefing.
He also confirmed that negotiations on the proposed bilateral trade agreement are continuing.
Defence cooperation, trade and critical minerals are understood to have featured prominently in Gor’s discussions with Doval and Misri.
Prime Minister Modi and US President Donald Trump had earlier directed their officials, during their meeting in France in June, to work towards an early, balanced and mutually beneficial trade agreement with meaningful commercial outcomes.
The bilateral relationship had faced considerable strain following Washington’s imposition of higher tariffs on Indian goods and disagreements over US claims concerning its role in ending the India-Pakistan military confrontation in May 2025.
New Delhi consistently rejected the assertion that Washington had brokered the cessation of hostilities, maintaining that the understanding between India and Pakistan was reached through direct communication between the two sides.
Differences over US immigration measures and a proposed increase in H-1B visa fees further complicated bilateral ties.
Despite these challenges, New Delhi and Washington have recently stepped up diplomatic engagement to rebuild confidence and accelerate progress on areas of mutual interest, including trade, defence, energy security and strategic supply chains.
