Vande Mataram to Be Sung at Red Fort for the First Time on Independence Day, Celebrations to Spotlight ‘Yuva Shakti’

NEW DELHI, Aug 10: In a historic first, Vande Mataram will be sung at the Red Fort during the Independence Day celebrations on August 15, with this year’s programme placing the spotlight on Yuva Shakti and the role of young Indians in helping build a developed India by 2047.

Defence Secretary R K Singh said the decision to highlight the achievements and contributions of the country’s youth had been planned well before the students’ agitation at Jantar Mantar.

“Youths are a critical part of our journey towards Viksit Bharat because they will both be contributing to it and will be hopefully gaining from it,” Singh said at a press conference.

He emphasised that the theme was not linked to any recent protest or political development, stating that preparations to celebrate youth achievements had been finalised before the Jantar Mantar agitation.

India will celebrate its 80th Independence Day on August 15, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the national celebrations from the historic Red Fort in Delhi.

Vande Mataram to mark 150 years

Singh said 2026 marks 150 years of Vande Mataram, which played an important role in inspiring people during India’s freedom struggle. As part of the commemoration, the national song will be performed from the ramparts of the Red Fort for the first time.

The song will be presented as the Prime Minister arrives at the Red Fort. Modi will subsequently unfurl the national flag and deliver his customary Independence Day address to the nation.

Adding to the commemorative programme, an Indian Air Force Mi-17 helicopter will carry a banner marking 150 years of Vande Mataram and shower flower petals over the gathering at the Red Fort.

Youth achievements to take centre stage

The celebrations will highlight the achievements of young Indians across various fields, particularly their contribution towards the goal of Viksit Bharat by 2047.

Nineteen students who won medals at the 2026 International Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematical Olympiads have been invited to the ceremony. Their achievements in science and mathematics will be showcased as an example of the potential of India’s young generation.

A government official said around 5,000 special guests from different walks of life have also been invited. The guests include individuals whose achievements and contributions are supporting the country’s development journey.

Rahul Gandhi invited

The Defence Secretary confirmed that Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has been invited to attend the Independence Day function.

He said seating arrangements will follow the government’s Table of Precedence (ToP). According to Singh, Gandhi’s seating will be placed after the Union Cabinet ministers in accordance with the prescribed protocol.

‘Seva Teerth’ featured on invitation cards

The invitation cards for this year’s celebrations feature Seva Teerth, reflecting the government’s emphasis on public service and dedication to the welfare of citizens.

An official said the Dharm Chakra depicted on the invitation card represents the continuous pursuit of righteous duty and selfless action.

Referring to Prime Minister Modi’s remarks while dedicating Seva Teerth to the nation, the official said the complex represents duty, compassion and commitment to the principle of putting the nation first.

Lake names replace VIP-focused seating

The government has also continued its effort to move away from traditional VIP-centric arrangements. While seating enclosures at the Republic Day celebrations were named after major rivers to highlight water conservation, this year’s Independence Day enclosures will be named after prominent lakes across India.

The arrangements are intended to reinforce the government’s broader message of public participation, environmental awareness and national service during the country’s Independence Day celebrations.
