Viksit Bharat and Swadeshi Must Rise Above Politics, President Says

Murmu outlines reform agenda, green growth push and global engagement in address opening Budget Session

New Delhi, Jan 29 : President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday called on Members of Parliament to remain united on the goals of Viksit Bharat, promotion of swadeshi and national security, asserting that these priorities transcend political differences.

Addressing a joint sitting of both Houses to mark the beginning of the Budget Session, the President said the government would continue to fast track reforms aimed at transforming India into a developed nation by 2047. She highlighted efforts to modernise governance systems, curb corruption and ensure efficient use of public funds for development and welfare.

Focus on reforms and growth sectors

Murmu said the government is advancing on what she described as the “Reforms Express,” updating outdated laws to meet future needs. She pointed to rising investments in the digital economy, artificial intelligence and data centres, alongside a broader push towards green growth and modern technology.

Emphasising the role of clean energy, she said nuclear power would be critical to meeting future energy demands. Referring to the recently enacted SHANTI Act, the President said it would help India achieve a nuclear capacity target of 100 gigawatts by 2047.

Employment and rural development

The President also spoke about the new VB-G RAM-G law, which she said guarantees 125 days of employment in rural areas. The legislation, she added, aims to reduce corruption and leakages while boosting rural development and supporting farmers, livestock rearers and fishermen.

Trade, technology and global role

Welcoming the conclusion of negotiations on a free trade agreement with the European Union, Murmu said the pact would strengthen manufacturing and services while opening up new job opportunities for young Indians.

She also cautioned against the misuse of artificial intelligence, warning that deepfakes, misinformation and fabricated content pose serious risks to democracy and social harmony. She urged Parliament to deliberate on safeguards to address these challenges.

Highlighting India’s international outreach, the President said the country has amplified the voice of the Global South, expanded partnerships across regions such as Africa and Latin America, and reinforced its role in multilateral platforms including the G20, BRICS, BIMSTEC and SCO.

Murmu also noted steps being taken to preserve India’s knowledge heritage, citing the Gyan Bharatam Mission, under which digitisation of ancient manuscripts has begun nationwide.
